III.  AUGUST 13, 2005 – GAME RECAPS

CLEVELAND LIONS 55, SOUTHERN MICHIGAN TIMBERWOLVES 6

Punt returner Brian Giovinazzi set MCFL records by returning four straight punts for touchdowns, all before halftime, and finishing with 315 yards in punt returns to lead to Lions to 49-point win over the Timberwolves.  Giovinazzi also intercepted a pass and returned it 40 yards for a score in the fourth quarter.  The Lions offense scored on each of their first two possessions, with the first, Charles Canady’s 5-yard run, being set up by Giovinazzi’s 38-yard punt return.  After fumble led to Jon Hunek’s 5-yard strike to Mike Parris with 7:40 remaining in the first quarter, the Cleveland offense was needed to run just eight more plays as the Lions led 42-6 at the half.  Lawrence Vickerstaff finished off the game’s scoring with a 47-yard pass to Eric Flynn.  Although the Cleveland defense was dominant as usual, holding the Timberwolves to seven yards on the ground and picking up six sacks, two by Ray Davis, Southern Michigan did reach them for the first points they have allowed in MCFL play this season.  Troy Rizzuto found Corterris Reese with a pair of long passes, the last a 28-yarder to put the Timberwolves on the board in the second quarter.

DETROIT SEMINOLES 28, CENTRAL OHIO LIONS 0

The Seminoles remained unscored upon in MCFL play, handing the Central Ohio Lions their first loss of the season in the process.  Detroit defensive back James Worthy proved to be the difference early on, accounting for the only points of the first half on an interception return.  Worthy had also returned the opening kick off 60 yards, but the Seminoles could not take advantage.  The Detroit offense finally reached the end zone in the third quarter when AnJuan Smith capped a 6 play, 52-yard drive with a 37-yard touchdown run.  James Brown followed with a 35-yard return of a short punt to put the Seminoles ahead, 21-0.  Detroit continued to pound the run in the fourth quarter, closing out the scoring when fullback Jeff Atkins burst off left end to score from 25 yards out.

KINGS COMETS 32, FLINT FURY 0

The Comets received 129 yards rushing from Keith Brooks, 107 in the first half, and their defense produced six turnovers to shut out the Fury and improve to 3-0 in the league.  Defensive lineman Jesse Black forced and recovered a pair of fumbles while also leading the team with five tackles.  Linebacker Bobby Atkinson added a sack, a forced fumble, and returned an interception nine yards for a touchdown for the final score of the game.  Quarterback Anthony Tyus tossed two first-half touchdowns to give Kings a 13-0 halftime lead, adding a touchdown on a quarterback sneak in the third quarter.  Brooks scored on a three-yard run early in the second half, shortly after surpassing the 1,000 yard mark for his career in his 12th game.  The Fury, which received 103 yards on the ground from running back Tony George, missed on two opportunities to score their first points in the MCFL.  Mike Ward ended one third-quarter drive with an interception at the 12-yard line and a blocked 42-yard field goal ended Flint’s final drive of the game.

LOUISVILLE BULLS 15, MICHIGAN TWISTERS 10

Ricky Williams came up with three key sacks to help the Louisville Bulls gain their first MCFL win of the season.  Williams’ sacks resulted in a safety, a fumble, and helped end the Twisters’ final drive of the game.

After Rich Wrightington pinned Michigan at their own two to start the second quarter, Williams reached Twisters’ quarterback Orlando Wright in the end zone to put the Bulls ahead 2-0.  Louisville further capitalized on the play, using five straight runs following the free kick to score on quarterback Marcus Warren’s 18-yard touchdown run.  Michigan also scored on a safety in the second quarter when a snap went over Wrightington’s head on a punt attempt.  Louisville expanded their lead to 15-2 when David Moss followed a blocked punt with a one-yard run, but a 40-yard kick return by Shaun Blackmon helped the Twisters respond.  Lawrence Sanger followed a fourth down conversion with a pair of runs to pull Michigan to within 15-10, but a sack by Williams on the Twister’s final drive resulted in a fourth-and-21 that the Twisters could not convert.
