It's a playing surface which will never see any traces of a lawnmower or grass fertilizer. In the company of children, Chateauguay Mayor Sergio Pavone, his aldermen and Revenue Minister Jean-Marc Fournier inaugurated the soon-to-be-completed artificial soccer/football field a week ago yesterday behind LPP high school. The work should be terminated by July 6. Soccer and football players will be able to benefit as early as Sunday, July 8. The Chateauguay Titans semi-pro football team, coached by John Mouland, has already shifted its home opener to LPP from Billings on Saturday, July 13 at 7:30 p.m. The realization of the projected required a $1.3 investment on the part of the City and the two levels of government in the framework of the Canada-Quebec Infrastructures work program. The municipality is paying about $900,000 while Quebec and Ottawa each fork over $208,000. The Grandes-Seigneuries school board has evidently authorized the construction of this play area for the benefit of the athletes. Resistant to inclement weather and also to wear and tear caused by spikes, the synthetic surface will enable teams to start their season earlier and finish later, according to City authorities. After a few weeks of intensive usage or heavy downpours, natural-grass fields become impractical, but such is not the case with artificial turf.(Tr:D.R.)
