Mustangs Lose on Final Play of the Game!
The Indiana Mustangs fall to 0 - 2 in the Mid-Continental Football League and 2 - 3 overall as the Kings Comets upends Indiana on Billy Back's hail mary catch on the final play of game. Anthony Tyus found Billy Back with a 33-yard hail mary pass as time expired, giving the Kings Comets a 19-15 win over the Indiana Mustangs Saturday night at Tri-Central High School in Sharpsville, IN.

Back's game-winning fourth down catch, which came after the ball was deflected by a pair of Mustang defenders in the end zone, capped an 11-play, 2:09 drive that included two fourth down conversions and a third down conversion. On the play immediately preceding the touchdown, Tyus had been forced to scramble for a seven-yard run, requiring the Comets to quickly get back in formation to get the final snap off with just a couple of seconds remaining. Prior to that, the Comets standout running back, Keith Brooks took a screen pass 21 yards on 4th down and 19 yards to essentially put the Comets into Mustang territory providing the Comets one last shot.

Shawn Wood's 28-yard field goal, his third of the night, had allowed Indiana to take a 15-13 lead after trailing 13-3 early in the second half. Wood had given the Mustangs an initial 3-0 lead with a 29-yard field goal five-and-a-half minutes into the second quarter, but the Comets responded with a drive that ended with Brooks racing to the corner of the end zone from two yards out. On the drive, Brooks carried seven times for 43 of the Comets' 59 yards on the drive. A bad snap on the extra point attempt held Kings' lead to 6-3. Kings quickly bolstered their advantage to 13-3 in the second half on a 60-yard screen pass from Tyus to Brooks. After the initial play of the third quarter was called back due to a holding penalty, Brooks took Tyus' lob pass and sprinted down to the 20 before cutting across the field to his right for the score.

The rest of the third quarter was marred by a combined 12 penalties by the two teams, with a short punt setting up a 27-yard Wood field goal to cut Kings' lead to 13-6. It appeared Indiana would tie the game when Mike Mundy found Kenny Beatty in the back of the end zone two-and-a-half minutes into the final quarter, but Wood's kick missed the mark, keeping the Comets ahead, 13-12.

Kings was unable to capitalize on a pair of unsportsmanlike conduct penalties on Indiana, allowing Mundy to lead the Mustangs on the go-ahead possession. Mundy completed four-of-six passes for 55 yards before the drive stalled at the Kings 9-yard line. Brooks finished the game with 59 yards rushing on 19 carries, also picking up 75 yards on a pair of screen passes. Tyus completed 8 of his 16 attempts for 158 yards after entering the game late in the first quarter in place of starter Casey Strong. Mundy led the Mustangs with 123 passing yards on 11 of 16 passing in place of usual starting quarterback Ean Decker. Linebackers Mike Schmitt and Keith Jackson led the Mustangs in tackles.

The Mustangs next game will be in Ft. Wayne at Homestead High School this Saturday, August 13 to face the Ft. Wayne Flyers who are 7 - 3.

III. AUGUST 6, 2005 - GAME RECAPS

CLEVELAND LIONS 31, MICHIGAN TWISTERS 0
The Cleveland defense came through with their second straight shutout, lifting the Lions to a road win over the Twisters. The Lions' defense also chipped in with two touchdown returns during a 24-point, six-minute stretch in the second quarter. Jon Hunek started the scoring, following a 42-yard strike to Melvin Stewart with a 13-yard touchdown toss to Vernell Jackson. Michigan appeared poised to even the score after a long Shaun Blackmon kick return and Cleveland penalty placed the Twisters at the Cleveland 11 yard line. The Lions turned the tables when Evan Kormos sacked Orlando Wright, forcing a fumble that Brian Giovinazzi picked up and ran back 92-yards for a 14-0 Cleveland lead. Just over two minutes later, Kormos scooped up a fumbled caused by William Powell's sack of Wright, scoring on a 38-yard fumble return. Sinisa Poucki tacked on a 42-yard field goal to end the first half. Stewart completed the scoring in the third quarter, hauling in a 20-yard touchdown pass from Hunek one play after Dionne Dye recovered another fumble caused by a sack of Wright. In all, the Lions defense reached Wright for seven sacks, forced and recovered four fumbles, and benefited from Dave Schiebaum's interception.

KINGS COMETS 19, INDIANA MUSTANGS 15
Anthony Tyus found Billy Back with a 33-yard hail mary pass as time expired, giving the Kings Comets a 19-15 win over the Indiana Mustangs. Prior to Tyus' game-winning heave, Indiana had rallied back from a 13-3 deficit early in the second half. Comet running back Keith Brooks scored a pair of touchdowns, one on a two-yard run in the final minute of the first half and the other on a 60-yard screen pass less than a minute into the second half, to give Kings the 10-point advantage. The Mustangs responded by scoring on each of their final three possessions of the game, including Shawn Wood's 28-yard field goal which put Indiana ahead, 15-13, with 2:20 remaining in the game. Michael Mundy also had a 20-yard touchdown pass to Kenny Beatty during the comeback, finishing 11 of 16 passing for 123 yards.

CENTRAL OHIO LIONS 6, LOUISVILLE BULLS 0
Krishaun Gilmore scored on a three-yard run on Central Ohio's opening possession of the game, and the Lions defense made the 6-0 advantage stand up the rest of the way. The Bulls were unable to capitalize on several opportunities in the second half, reaching Central Ohio territory with five of their six possessions in the final two quarters. A fumble at the Lions' 12 at the end of Toye Okolo's 62-yard reception from Marcus Warren ended one drive at the end of the third quarter. The fourth quarter featured Karl Rose blocking a 26-yard field goal attempt by Rich Wrightington and the Central Ohio defense stopping the Bulls on downs at the six-yard line with less than five minutes remaining. Louisville out-gained the Lions 226 yards to 155, including a 112-32 edge in passing yards, but 9 penalties for 149 yards and six turnovers helped negate that advantage.

DETROIT SEMINOLES 43, FLINT FURY 0
The Flint Fury endured their second straight shutout loss at the hands of one of the two representatives in last season's MCFL championship game. After being held to six points in the opening quarter, the Seminoles scored twice to build a 20-0 halftime lead, adding 13 more points in the third quarter.
