Father John Frederick, AFA Hall of Fame Class of 1998 Father John Frederick was recently recognized by the Hawaii Senate for volunteer management and coaching of youth football in Hawaii the past 15 years. He retired from coaching this year. The picture shows senator Mike Gabbard (a strong football supporter) presenting him with the award. Father John volunteered 20 years of his life managing and coaching Semi Pro Football. He was inducted as a Coach into the AFA's Hall of Fame in 1998. This past April he was consecrated a Vicar Bishop in the Eastern Catholic (orthodox) Church in Hawaii. Gone But Not Forgotten Jim Williams AFA Hall of Fame Class of 1996 From 1974 to 1978, the place to be on a Saturday night was at a Newton Nite Hawks football game at Holland-Paterson Memorial Field or H.A. Lynn Field. The Nite Hawks were a semi-professional football team which called Newton home. One of the founders and former coaches, James (Jim) Fred Williams died on July 21 in Shreveport, La. It was Williams and Newton businessman Jim Foster who founded the team in 1974. "Jim Williams was an army recruiter here in Newton at the time. He served as the team's defensive coordinator the first season then was our head coach the second year," said Stan Allspach, former Nite Hawk player and assistant coach at William Penn University in Oskaloosa. Pro Football Hall of Fame's Biggest Snub is Former New York Jets' Great Joe ... Rant Sports Klecko was one of the few players to have played pro football before entering college, as then Temple University head coach Wayne Hardin found him playing for a semi-pro team in Aston, Pa. Since Klecko wanted to keep his college eligibility, he never accepted pay from the team and drove a truck instead until Hardin recruited him to the Philadelphia school. Before heading off to Temple University for his college career, he actually played semi-pro football, under an assumed name. He played in the Seaboard Football League for the Aston Knights as "Jim Jones" from Poland University, in order to play and ... " How many of you remember playing against this team? I know Chazz Brown & Dave Bonsell of Chambersburg played against him; so did Dave Burch of the Binghamton Jets !"
