American Football Association Newsletter 1/20/10 In This Issue: •   AFA Kicks Off the 2010 Semi-Pro Football Season by Offering Cost Reduction to General Liability Insurance Coverage •   AFA Team Membership AFA Kicks Off the 2010 Semi-Pro Football Season by Offering Cost Reduction to General Liability Insurance Coverage The AFA urges all adult tackle football teams and leagues to protect themselves against crippling lawsuits by buying quality General Liability insurance. The AFA recently earned for its member teams a $65 reduction in the cost of the annual policy premium. The new premium is now $350 per team per year instead of the previous year's $415 per team. To keep up with the requests from organizations needing to team spectator liability coverage of at least $2 million, the national association for semi-pro teams and leagues has been able to continue providing that coverage for 2010. The $2 million coverage will help teams whose school boards and municipal governments are insisting that the teams playing at their football facilities now carry the extended $2 million spectator liability insurance coverage. Additionally, because of the number of years the AFA has been doing business with the Sadler and Company Insurance Agency, the AFA earned for its member teams a $65 reduction in the cost of the annual policy premium. The new premium is now $350 per team per year instead of the previous year's $415. The AFA insurance policy now covers all team activities that are scheduled, sanctioned, approved, organized and supervised by the named insured, including practices, tryouts, clinics, operation of concession stands at covered activities, games, playoffs, end of season tournaments, promotional appearances, awards banquets, ceremonies and meetings. Fund-raisers will still be required to be pre-approved. Many leagues make the mistake of allowing their teams to purchase coverage on an individual basis. When things are done this way, there is no coverage for the league itself and its directors and officers. Instead, the league should purchase the coverage under its own name and should pay a premium on behalf of 100% of all teams. This is the only way for the league to be covered - and it is free to the league assuming that the league can be reimbursed by the teams. All Semi-Pro (Amateur Adult Tackle Football) teams and leagues joining the American Football Association (AFA) for 2010 qualify for participation in the national association's insurance program. The Insurance Carrier for the AFA policy is the Great American Assurance Company and the policy is issued through K&K Insurance Group, Inc. K&K is one of the worlds largest and most active insurance companies associated with amateur and professional sports. Through the cooperative efforts of both Sadler Sports and K&K Insurance, the AFA has managed to set its new policy effective dates to coincide with the national association's fiscal year of January 1st through December 31st of each year. Predators, Rams kick off football seasons today

 A new season of minor league football opens for Brevard teams today, with lots of questions about to be answered for local fans.

New on the scene are the Space Coast Predators, a first-year squad playing for owner-coach Jim Eldridge, formerly with the Brevard Rams.

The Predators will join the Rams this year in the Florida Football Alliance, an organization of 18 amateur teams stretching from Jacksonville to Miami and throughout the state.

Eldridge said the Predators have been practicing since the summer and are eager to showcase their skills against the Central Florida Tigers at their home field, Sebastian River High, at 8 tonight.

Kaul: A brutal national pastime

Football is our national pastime. It used to be baseball — no longer.

It's hard to believe but there was a time when there was hardly a town or village that didn't support some sort of baseball team, be it minor league, semi-professional or amateur. Baseball players were national heroes. The World Series was a big deal. For six months of the year the sport dominated the water-cooler-lunch-room chitchat.

No more. Now it's football, football, football. And it's not just six months a year, what with the draft and training camps and exhibition games — it's more like 11.

It's all poor baseball can do to seize the nation's attention for a couple of weeks when it plays its World Series and even then its hold is tenuous. (Quick, who was the losing team in the World Series this year? I thought so.)

Yes, football is king; of that there can be no doubt. There's only one more thing that needs to be said about it:

It's a truly awful game.

It's a brutal game played by bullies for the enjoyment of people who would be at home watching gladiators fight to the death in the Coliseum of ancient Rome.

And, like ancient Rome, football uses its combatants like Kleenex, then discards them with hardly a thought.

Just before Christmas the National Football League announced its ongoing study of the effects of head injuries on players was so compromised by conflicts of interest that it was shutting it down.

After stonewalling critics and players for years on the subject of concussions and their aftereffects, the league finally acknowledged that yes, perhaps concussions were a bad thing.

"It's quite obvious from the medical research that's been done that concussions can lead to long-term problems," a league spokesperson said.

And just now they figure out that getting hit in the head repeatedly might be bad for you?

Dozens of cases of dementia, early Alzheimer's disease and cognitive decline among older players have surfaced in recent years. Autopsies performed on the brains of deceased players have revealed signs of unusual damage, traceable to brain trauma.

Nor is a head injury the only fruit of a career in football. Sports Illustrated recently ran a piece about Dave Pear, a former Pro Bowl defensive lineman and Super Bowl champion who ended a five-year playing career in 1980.

"I wish I never played football," he told the magazine.

Because of injuries he sustained playing football, injuries he was encouraged — indeed, required — to play through as a player, he walks with a cane, when he walks at all. He suffers from vertigo and memory loss and is in virtually constant pain. He has undergone eight surgeries in the past 18 years, including disc removal and rod fusion in his back, arthroplasty in a hip, as well as a neck operation.

The Sports Illustrated writer Jeff Pearlman, who has interviewed more than 150 former players on the subject, says that roughly 60 percent of them live with extraordinary physical pain as part of their daily lives.

Barry Sanders was a favorite player of mine. I thought that the Detroit Lions player the most spectacular running back I'd ever seen. I still think that.

He retired suddenly about 10 years ago and no one could figure out why. He seemed in good health. He was at the top of his game. But he quit.

Recently he revealed that in the summer before his retirement he'd gone to Texas for a golf tournament and seen Earl Campbell there.

If Sanders was the flashiest runner, Campbell was the one who best combined power and speed. He was a monster, a punishing running back who ran over people, then away from them.

And when Sanders saw him that summer, he couldn't walk. He needed a golf cart to get around. Earl Campbell, the indestructible. That's when Sanders decided to quit.

If football players were animals, then football would be, like dog-fighting, outlawed. The players are our pit bull; we are their Michael Vicks.

Recently the AFA/Hall of Fame selection committee completed its annual task of reviewing personal profiles of qualified individuals nominated for induction into the Semi-Pro Football Hall of Fame as the. . . "Class of 2009". Information submitted by HOF alumni and subsequent review by the selection committee resulted in the selection of 23 people for enshrinement this year. This year's Class of HOF'ers will be enshrined as the "Class of 2009" at the AFA's 29th annual Semi-Pro Football Hall of Fame Induction Dinner which will take place at Indian Lakes-Hilton, Bloomingdale, Illinois on Thursday thru Saturday, October 22-23-24, 2009.

The big semi-pro football weekend will kick off with the annual AFA/HOF Alumni "Huddle" cocktail party Thursday evening.

Friday evening will find the "Class of 2009" Semi-Pro Football Hall of Fame Inductees being honored by their family, friends and football peers, as they accept enshrinement into the American Football Association's highest place of recognition. During the evening the inductees will be introduced by their 'presenters' and/or alumni sponsors.

Saturday morning will feature our annual Semi-Pro Football Alumni Clubs Breakfast followed by the AFA Golf Tournament sponsored by the Elmhurst Travelers Football Alumni Association in the afternoon.

The e nshrinement of this year's class of 23 new hall of famers will see the 29-year total number of inductees expand from 569 members to 592 members. Since the inaugural enshrinement in 1981 (including the Class of 2009) the AFA has recognized 329 players; 96 coaches; 75 executives; 25 officials; 20 pioneers; 20 media/historians; 11 trainer/equipment men; 6 associated with youth football; 5 involved with international semi-pro; 4 from the women's level; and even 1 'super fan'.

The American Football Association is proud to present the names of those who will be enshrined into the AFA Semi-Pro Football Hall of Fame as the "Class of 2009" (names in parentheses indicate sponsors of the new inductees):
