Semi Pro Football

What's wrong with football? It's written in the pain on Greg Hadley's face. The senior from Colgate University, a two-time all-conference linebacker on the school's football team, is sitting in a Bedford, Mass., laboratory, staring at shattered brains of dead football players. On this Friday afternoon, Hadley has come to visit Dr. Ann McKee, a Boston University neurological researcher who has received a dozen brains donated from former NFL, college and high school players. In each one, it's simple to spot a protein called tau, which defines a debilitating disease known as chronic traumatic encephalopathy, or CTE. Common symptoms of CTE include sudden memory loss, paranoia and depression during middle age. The disease is also known as dementia pugilistica, or punch-drunk syndrome, because until recently the overwhelming majority of its victims were boxers. Not anymore. Researchers like McKee have found a deep and disturbing association between CTE and America's most popular sport. (Watch a video of what football can do to the brain.) http://www.time.com/time/video/player/0,32068,64253995001_1957921,00.html

David Paul Hernandey Sr., 1936–2010: Worked his way up from dockhand to owner of trucking company

Touted benefits of playing Native American flute

By Joan Giangrasse Kates, Special to the Tribune

January 21, 2010
Throughout his seven-year battle with lung cancer, and especially while undergoing chemotherapy and radiation treatments, David Paul Hernandey found comfort and strength playing his Native American flute.

The instrument — carved from wood with six finger holes — was made by and given to him by a close friend of Navajo ancestry.
"In his last days, even when he was so weak and on oxygen, he'd pick up his flute and play," said his wife, Peg. "It made him feel stronger."

Hoping to share with others the physical, emotional and spiritual benefits he gained by playing the flute, Mr. Hernandey founded the Wellness Center Native American Flute Circle, and later, the Living Water Flute Circle.

"Even as he fought through his cancer, he was thinking of how to make a difference," his wife said. "It was part of his hope in making this world just a little bit better."

Mr. Hernandey, 74, of Downers Grove, the retired owner of a trucking business and a former semi-pro football player, died Wednesday, Jan. 13, in his Downers Grove home.

"Through his flute, Dave would express himself," his wife said. "He played it everyday, even the day he died."

Mr. Hernandey founded the Wellness Center Native American Flute Circle in 2004, originally as an informal gathering of Native American flutists at the Wellness House in Hinsdale, a care facility that provides resources and services for cancer patients. A few years later, he and his wife founded the Living Water Flute Circle out of the couple's home.

"Because of Dave, so many people have discovered what an extraordinary instrument the Native American flute is," said Jeanne Halama, who three years ago joined the 15-member Living Water Flute Circle. "It's so expressive. It has sounds that are amazing."

In 1964, Mr. Hernandey began working as a dockhand at North Shore & Central Illinois Freight Co., a trucking company in southwest suburban McCook. He rose through the ranks, eventually becoming owner of the company. He retired in 2001.

Mr. Hernandey learned to play the Native American flute in 2002 after attending a Native American cultural event in Chicago with his wife.
"The first time he played it was a release for him," she said. "He described it as 'totally freeing.'"

Other survivors include two sons, David and Michael; two daughters, Michelle Gagnard and Lana Zenner; a sister, Bea Giordano; a stepson, Eric Fuller; and eight grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday in Kathryn Legge Memorial Lodge, 5901 S. County Line Road, Hinsdale.

AFA Kicks Off the 2010 Semi-Pro Football Season by Offering Cost Reduction to General Liability Insurance Coverage
The AFA urges all adult tackle football teams and leagues to protect themselves against crippling lawsuits by buying quality General Liability insurance. The AFA recently earned for its member teams a $65 reduction in the cost of the annual policy premium. The new premium is now $350 per team per year instead of the previous year's $415 per team.

To keep up with the requests from organizations needing to team spectator liability coverage of at least $2 million, the national association for semi-pro teams and leagues has been able to continue providing that coverage for 2010.

The $2 million coverage will help teams whose school boards and municipal governments are insisting that the teams playing at their football facilities now carry the extended $2 million spectator liability insurance coverage.

Additionally, because of the number of years the AFA has been doing business with the Sadler and Company Insurance Agency, the AFA earned for its member teams a $65 reduction in the cost of the annual policy premium. The new premium is now $350 per team per year instead of the previous year's $415.

The AFA insurance policy now covers all team activities that are scheduled, sanctioned, approved, organized and supervised by the named insured, including practices, tryouts, clinics, operation of concession stands at covered activities, games, playoffs, end of season tournaments, promotional appearances, awards banquets, ceremonies and meetings. Fund-raisers will still be required to be pre-approved.

Many leagues make the mistake of allowing their teams to purchase coverage on an individual basis. When things are done this way, there is no coverage for the league itself and its directors and officers. Instead, the league should purchase the coverage under its own name and should pay a premium on behalf of 100% of all teams. This is the only way for the league to be covered - and it is free to the league assuming that the league can be reimbursed by the teams.

All Semi-Pro (Amateur Adult Tackle Football) teams and leagues joining the American Football Association (AFA) for 2010 qualify for participation in the national association's insurance program. The Insurance Carrier for the AFA policy is the Great American Assurance Company and the policy is issued through K&K Insurance Group, Inc. K&K is one of the worlds largest and most active insurance companies associated with amateur and professional sports. Through the cooperative efforts of both Sadler Sports and K&K Insurance, the AFA has managed to set its new policy effective dates to coincide with the national association's fiscal year of January 1st through December 31st of each year.

Teams wanting more information on the AFA's new Commercial General Liability Insurance program can contact Debbie at the Sadler Insurance Company sports department (800-622-7370) or visit http://www.sadlersports.com/afa/coverage/pdf/afa-afagl.pdf
